Gazprom enhances reliability of energy supplies to Moscow and Leningrad Region and launches construction of new power plant in Yakutia
RELEASE
Release
Today, Gazprom put into operation upgraded generating facilities in two constituent entities of the Russian Federation, namely modernized turbo generator No. 4 at CHPP-23 in Moscow and modernized turbo generator No. 1 at the Kirishi SDPP in the Leningrad Region.
Taking part in the events celebrating the launch of the facilities was Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee.
CHPP-23 is one of the key power plants of Moscow's energy system. It is the source of power and heat for the Central, Eastern and a part of the Northeastern Administrative Districts of Moscow.
The Kirishi SDPP is the largest thermal power plant in northwestern Russia, which supplies heat to the town of Kirishi and the refinery located near the town.
The modernization of the turbo generators at both power plants involved comprehensive replacement of the core and auxiliary equipment. Inter alia, new steam turbines with state-of-the-art automated control systems and new generators were installed. All of the new equipment was manufactured by Russian enterprises.
As a result, the electric capacity of turbo generator No. 4 at CHPP-23 was increased from 100 MW to 110 MW and its thermal capacity went up from 160 Gcal/h to 175 Gcal/h.
The electric capacity of turbo generator No. 1 at the Kirishi SDPP grew from 50 MW to 60 MW and its thermal capacity rose from 46 Gcal/h to 60 Gcal/h.
The modernization of the turbo generators at both power plants enhances the reliability of energy supplies to consumers, while also meeting the growing demand for electric power and heat demonstrated by the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. For instance, the construction of residential buildings and social facilities, as well as the development of transport infrastructure, are actively underway in the east of Moscow.
With the launch of the new capacities, Gazprom has finished the first stage of the ambitious upgrade of power generation equipment at CHPP-23 and the second stage of the same activities at the Kirishi SDPP (in 2023, the modernized turbo generator No. 2 was put into operation at the Kirishi SDPP).
The modernization activities at the power plants continue. Next in line to receive comprehensive replacement of equipment are two turbo generators (No. 3 and No. 7) at CHPP-23 and the third and final turbo generator (No. 4) at the Kirishi SDPP.
Today, Gazprom has also commenced the main works on the construction of the Yuzhno-Yakutsk Thermal Power Plant (TPP) located near the urban settlement of Chulman in the Neryungrinsky District of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
The installed electric capacity of the power plant will be 330 MW. The project will be implemented in two stages: two gas turbine units with an aggregate capacity of 220 MW will be built within the first stage of the project and a 110 MW steam turbine will be installed within the second stage.
The Yuzhno-Yakutsk TPP will run on natural gas delivered via the Power of Siberia gas pipeline. A gas pipeline branch with a length of 8.5 kilometers will be built to connect the power plant to Power of Siberia.
The Yuzhno-Yakutsk TPP will help achieve the objective of providing the electrification of the railway infrastructure of the Eastern Polygon, a railway network of strategic importance to Russia which is being developed by Russian Railways.
Once launched, the power plant will provide jobs to over 250 people.
“For many years, the Gazprom Group has been successfully implementing large-scale investment projects in the power generation sector. We create new generating capacities and perform upgrade activities at the existing power plants. We work in a high-quality and efficient manner, relying on the products of domestic manufacturers.
After the completion of these stages of works at CHPP-23 in Moscow and the Kirishi SDPP in the Leningrad Region, the country's energy system has become even more robust and reliable. The new power plant in Yakutia will make a substantial contribution to the socioeconomic development of Russian regions,” said Alexey Miller.
Background
CHPP-23 is owned by Mosenergo and the Kirishi SDPP is owned by OGK-2 (both companies are part of the Gazprom Energoholding Group).
Gazprom Energoholding, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gazprom, manages the companies of the Gazprom Group in the power and heat generation sectors, as well as in the power machinery industry.
The capacities of CHPP-23 and the Kirishi SDPP are undergoing modernization as part of the state-run program for upgrading generating facilities in the power sector (COMMod). As part of the COMMod program, Gazprom Energoholding plans to modernize facilities with the aggregate capacity of about 3.4 GW in 2022–2027.
By virtue of the Russian Government's Order No. 1288-r dated May 18, 2023, the Yuzhno-Yakutsk TPP construction project is included in the Comprehensive plan for the modernization and expansion of the trunkline infrastructure.
The Power of Siberia gas trunkline is the largest gas transmission system in eastern Russia. It serves to deliver gas from the Irkutsk and Yakutia gas production centers to consumers in eastern Russia and to carry out gas exports to China.
The Kovyktinskoye field forms the basis for the Irkutsk gas production center, and the Chayandinskoye field is the basis for the Yakutia gas production center.
