Gazprom’s Spartakiada Games open in St. Petersburg

The opening ceremony for Gazprom’s Spartakiada Games was held at the platform in front of the Gazprom Arena stadium in St. Petersburg.
The event was attended by Sergey Khomyakov, Deputy Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, Sergey Gustov, Director General of Gazprom Mezhregiongaz, Anton Shantyr, Head of the Committee for Physical Culture and Sports of St. Petersburg, and Tamara Moskvina, Honored Figure Skating Coach of the USSR and Russia and Ambassador of Gazprom’s Spartakiada Games.
The 2022 Spartakiada Games are bringing together 31 adult teams representing subsidiaries of Gazprom from Russia and Belarus, as well as 14 student teams from the Company’s partner universities.
The competitions will take place at eight sports facilities across St. Petersburg, culminating on August 12. In the course of the week, employees of Gazprom will demonstrate their prowess in track-and-field athletics, swimming, football, kettlebell lifting, volleyball, and chess. Students will compete in bodybuilding, track-and-field race, and darts. A total of 109 medals will be awarded.
The corporate competition’s flag was raised during the opening ceremony. Tamara Moskvina ignited the flame of the Spartakiada Games.
Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, sent his opening address to the competition’s participants and organizers. An excerpt from his message:
“This year, Gazprom’s major celebration of sports is for the first time hosted by St. Petersburg, the city housing the head office of our Company. This city is currently celebrating the 350th anniversary of the birth of its founder, the first Russian emperor Peter the Great.
May all athletes demonstrate the best athletic qualities in a fair fight. I wish you good luck and every success!”
Background
Gazprom has been holding Spartakiada Games since 1996. Among the key objectives of the Games are promoting a healthy lifestyle, exchanging work experience related to physical culture and mass sports, and preserving sports traditions.
The Games take place in regions where Gazprom’s subsidiaries are present. Participation is prohibited for members of Russian national teams and those taking part in zonal competitions, official national, European and global championships and tournaments, and the Olympic Games.
