The joint sessions of IGU Programme Committee A (Sustainable Development) and Working Committee 1 (Gas Exploration and Production) took place on February 4 and 5 in Novy Urengoy, in the premises of Gazprom Dobycha Yamburg.

Vladimir Mironov, Deputy Director General for Business Development of Gazprom Dobycha Yamburg, welcomed the guests.

“We have a lot in common, because our key focus is on natural gas,” he said. “We see your presence here, in gas-rich areas of the Russian North, as an evidence of your interest in developing the gas industry, in reliable on-going cooperation with Gazprom and Russia in general.”

Representatives of 17 countries had their plenary and group sessions summarizing the 2011–2014 performance and defining IGU plans for the next three years. These plans will be presented at the IGU’s Forum in Paris this summer.

The Novy Urengoy discussion focused on the following priorities: sustainable development of the energy sector, new technology in hydrocarbon exploration and field development, assessment of gas deposit operating cycles, unconventional hydrocarbons, gas hydrates and environmental & social aspects.

Marcos Sugaya, the Working Committee 1 Secretary, mentioned at the plenary session that the meeting was not traditional, and that Novy Urengoy, the Russian natural gas production center, was selected for a reason.

According to him, the IGU’s visit to the Russian Far North had several purposes, and one of the main objectives was to learn from Gazprom practices in this difficult region. “In this extreme environment gas producing facilities have a great reliability margin, which is extremely important for natural gas consumers,” Mr. Sugaya said.

He also emphasized unique Gazprom practices in preserving the traditional lifestyle patterns of the Far North indigenes during the development of major field infrastructure.

As part of this visit, the guests went to Salekhard – the capital city of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area, had a sightseeing tour there and a meeting with Governor Dmitry Kobylkin, who informed them about the outlook for the region and cooperation with Gazprom. The final destination was at gas producing facilities.

Background

Gazprom Dobycha Yamburg is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Gazprom. It operates in the territory of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area. Its core business is gas and gas condensate production. The company is developing the Yamurgskoye and Zapolyarnoye fields; it is the license holder for the Tazovskoye, Yuzhno-Parusovoye and Severo-Parusovoye fields.

Natural gas is treated at 19 gas gathering stations and gas treatment plants. The number of gas and gas condensate wells exceeds 2,000. The production capacity of the company allows for recovering circa 200 billion cubic meters of natural gas and more than 5 million tons of gas condensate annually.

The headcount of Gazprom Dobycha Yamburg is about 11,000 persons.

IGU was founded in 1931 to promote the gas industry development on the global scale. Currently, the Union includes gas associations and companies from 71 countries: it has 72 Charter Members and 30 Associate Members.

The IGU members account for 95 per cent of the global natural gas production. It is a credible non-government non-commercial organization, the main center for analyzing and summarizing the global gas sector practices. Today it is an international leader of multi-discipline research carried out through its Working and Programme Committees, as well as special Task Forces. Our country has been participating in the IGU activities starting from 1957. Gazprom is an IGU Charter Member representing Russia.
