The first summer training series of the main Russian women's biathlon team started at the Integrated Biathlon and Ski Complex on the Psekhako Ridge. Biathletes are getting ready for the Summer Biathlon World Cup, which will be held from September 17 to September 24 in Ufa.
During the training, the women's team tested for the first time the roller ski trail prepared ahead of schedule by Gazprom Sotsinvest. Two-time Olympic Champion Olga Zaitseva, Olympic Champion Svetlana Sleptsova, World Cup Winner Olga Vilukhina and other biathletes of the main Russian team have already held several trainings and explored the Complex.
“This training series in Sochi is very important for us – first of all, we want to get acquainted with the stadium, at which the biathletes will fight for the medals of the 2014 Olympics,” said the team head coach Wolfgang Pichler.
Furthermore, two major international biathlon competitions – the Interregional Biathlon Cup and the World Cup round – will be held at the Laura Center this winter. These events will gather together the best biathletes from around the world.
Background
One of the biathlon versions is summer biathlon, which substitutes skiing with cross-country running, roller skiing, bicycling or another kind of motion typical for the summertime. Originally, in summer biathletes and skiers used roller skis for training before winter competitions. Roller skis are adapted for riding on all surfaces (paved and unpaved roads, cross-country terrain) and are used both for the double poling and for skating stride. Roller skis speed can exceed 50 kilometers per hour.
