Gazprom and Germany Are Linked Together by Football and FC Schalke 04

Germany is a large consumer of Russian gas and a long-standing partner of Gazprom. Beginning from 2007 Gazprom has been a sponsor of the most popular Bundesliga club – FC Schalke 04. Thanks to the established partnership, the logo of Gazprom may be seen now on the sporting gear of the club boasting deep-rooted football traditions.

The birth-place of FC Schalke 04 is the Ruhr region situated in the very heart of the German power industry. The club was founded in 1904 and initially had the name of Westfalen Schalke with red and yellow colors of the gear. In 1924 the club changed the name to Schalke 04 and adopted white and blue colors.

The list of the club’s honors is impressive: Schalke 04 is a seven-time champion of Germany, a five-time winner of the German Football Association (DFB) cup, and in 1997 the team sensationally won the UEFA cup. Schalke 04 is among the three most successful German clubs for the last five years. In the season 2010/2011 the team reached the Champions League semi-finals and won the German Football Association (DFB) cup.

With more than a century-long history, Schalke 04 has experienced a plenty of ups and downs. Nevertheless, the club has always had dedicated fans anxiously supporting their team. As of today, there are some 100 000 people – members of the club.
