Construction of the Adler thermal power plant (TPP) in Imereti lowland began in autumn 2009. This is one of the key infrastructure facilities of Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi. Adler TPP will provide power and heat to the sports, transport and tourist facilities as well as to businesses and homes in the surrounding areas. It is planned that the TPP with the capacity of more than 360 MW will cover over a third of the projected peak loads during the winter Olympics.

The Adler TPP has become one of the first power facilities in Sochi which passed public hearings and was approved by the state ecological expertise. High seismicity of the region has been taken into account when building the TPP: engineering solutions and construction materials meet the most stringent requirements.

Special attention is paid to the environmental safety of power plant: natural gas, the most environmentally friendly energy source, will be the main fuel for electricity and heat production at the TPP. The TPP cooling system supposes significant water savings: the closed circuit water supply system with dry cooling towers (cooling water devices) where cooling water circulates in a closed circuit will not allow to increase the air humidity and environmental pollution. In addition, the cutting-edge combined cycle gas turbine technology will provide high efficiency (52 per cent), low fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emission by some 30 per cent.

The Adler TPP construction is nearing completion: the equipment is currently being set up to carry out first tests. Commissioning of the TPP is planned for 2012. The TPP maintenance will be arrange in three shifts of 65 workers each – there is no need for a large number of personnel at a modern TPP.
