Alexey Miller's column

Answering the question posed by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on the South Stream gas pipeline construction starting date, Alexey Miller noted, “We will begin construction this December. Mr. Medvedev, all the instructions required to design the gas pipeline for the throughput of 63 billion cubic meters of gas will be immediately given.”

“We have brought South Stream to the actual construction stage. It is no exaggeration to say that Gazprom is busy with the project 24 hours a day. This abnormally cold winter, which caused a spike in demand for Russian gas in Europe, is another proof that South Stream has to be and will be built. Europe is in need for the new corridors delivering Russian gas with no transiters.”

Our Gas is Still Too Profitable

The gas price which is linked with the basket of oil products has grown over the recent decade as well as the price on most of other raw materials. Our gas is not too expensive at all. Quite to the contrary, it is too profitable.

In the coming years Europe will need significant investments in the energy infrastructure, particularly from international investors. Taking the financial crisis into account, it will be a difficult job. Gazprom has announced its readiness for cooperation.

“LNG production development is an absolute priority as compared to pipeline gas export to Asia-Pacific markets.

For instance, by supplying Russian LNG via the Northern Sea Route we will significantly reduce transportation costs and make this product highly competitive in these target Asian markets.”

"In 2012 Gazprom will raise by 4 billion cubic meters the amount of Russian gas transmission via Belarus to the EU countries."

"We have been doubling the purchase of Azerbaijani gas for the second consecutive year. The Russian-Azerbaijani energy partnership is developing at a good pace and that demonstrates the mutual aspiration for further buildup of hydrocarbons supplies. The absence of upper limit for the gas purchase amount, geographic proximity, well-developed gas transmission infrastructure and no transiting zones make natural gas export to Russia most profitable for Azerbaijan."

“We have everything in place to significantly expedite the previously announced date of the South Stream construction launch. We have a regulatory basis, great interest of the project participants in Europe, the required funds and the unique track record of delivering large-scale gas transmission projects offshore. The project is in great demand, people are looking forward to it and we are ready to launch it.”

"Year 2011 ended on a good note for Gazprom. The Company produced and supplied to the market more than 513 billion cubic meters of gas."
