On December 5, 1977, the USSR Gas Industry Ministry issued an order to establish the Urengoy Gas Production Association (Urengoygazdobycha, renamed as Gazprom Dobycha Urengoy on February 1, 2008).
On April 22, 1978, the company’s first comprehensive gas treatment unit (CGTU) was put into operation. A mere month later, the first billion cubic meters of Urengoy gas from CGTU-1 entered the pipeline. By 2016, Gazprom Dobycha Urengoy’s total amount of extracted gas exceeded 6.7 trillion cubic meters. No other company in the world has ever produced such an immense amount of gas from a single gas field.
On June 6, 1966, Urengoyskoye oil, gas and condensate field – one of world’s largest – was discovered in northern Tyumen Region
Scientists, engineers, well drillers, gas producers, builders, and transportation workers made enormous efforts to quickly construct Urengoy oil and gas complex in difficult natural and climatic conditions of Extreme North
Gazprom Dobycha Urengoy’s major activities include geological exploration and hydrocarbon feedstock production and treatment.

The company has licenses for geological exploration and development within the Urengoyskoye, Pestsovoye, Severo-Samburgskoye, Yuzhno-Pestsovoye, Zapadno-Pestsovoye and Vostochno-Padinskoye fields, as well as the Cenomanian deposits of the Severo-Urengoyskoye oil, gas and condensate field.
Gazprom Dobycha Urengoy’s area of operation
In the course of establishing the Urengoy energy complex within and outside the Arctic Circle, Gazprom Dobycha Urengoy commissioned 22 comprehensive gas treatment units (including 16 units for Cenomanian gas, five units for Valanginian gas, and one for Achimov deposits), two oil production facilities, 20 booster compressor stations, five gas cooling stations, and two compressor stations for associated petroleum gas utilization. Over the years, the company laid more than a thousand kilometers of interfield pipelines and built a robust industrial infrastructure ensuring a reliable operation of oil and gas production facilities.

Gazprom Dobycha Urengoy was among the first gas production companies to give up the practice of low-pressure gas flaring. By commissioning compressor stations for associated petroleum gas utilization at central oil gathering facilities, the company achieved efficiency in using associated gas and reduced harmful emissions, which helped significantly increase the reliability of oil production systems.

Among the company’s biggest achievements of recent years is the development of the Achimov deposits with an extremely complicated geological structure, located at a depth of up to four kilometers with an abnormally high formation pressure and high gas condensate content. The Achimov deposits were first developed by Comprehensive Gas Treatment Unit No. 31 that was brought onstream in 2008 at block 1A of Achimgaz, a joint venture formed by Gazprom Dobycha Urengoy and Wintershall Holding.

In 2009, Gazprom Dobycha Urengoy was the first of Gazprom’s subsidiaries to start pilot production at high-tech gas condensate production site No. 22 for extracting hydrocarbon feedstock from the Achimov deposits of the Urengoyskoye field. In the near future, the company plans to add one more workshop to the site and build another Achimov production complex.
