Strategy for power industry
Power generation is a strategically important business area for Gazprom Group. Its core generating assets are consolidated in Gazprom Energoholding, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gazprom. The Group's power generation strategy for the Russian market was adopted in 2007. The expansion of Gazprom Group's presence in the power sector helps strengthen its overall business in the long term and derive additional income.
Gazprom Group's strategic goals in the power industry are as follows:
- diversification of tariff regulation risks;
- diversification of the fuel balance;
- construction of new capacities;
- improvement of operating efficiency.
In achieving its strategic goals in Russia, Gazprom Group pays particular attention to building new generating capacities, which enhances the efficiency of the Group's power business and increases its power and heat output.
Gazprom considers the power industry to be one of the most promising business sectors in terms of global gas consumption potential.
In this connection, the Group continues to constantly monitor business opportunities in the industry, including by exploring the possibility of acquiring stakes in generating assets outside Russia in order to secure additional pipeline and liquefied natural gas supplies. At present, the construction of a thermal power plant in Pancevo, Serbia, is Gazprom Energoholding's main international project. The project is implemented in conjunction with NIS.
In addition, Gazprom Group develops its electricity trading and marketing activities in Europe through the Gazprom Marketing and Trading Ltd. subsidiary company.
