Environmental ProtectionUnique bridge across Yuribey River
The Yuribey River bed width doesn’t exceed 200–300 meters. For only several days a year the river overflows and spreads 3–4 kilometers and then resumes its natural course.
Yuribey is a specific river. Its waters and banks represent a unique ecosystem and a great historical and cultural value. The favorite fish species of the Russian Tsars, nelma and muksun, spawn in Yuribey. Rare bird species listed in the Red Book of Russia nest and breed on the steep slopes of Yuribey. In the river’s lower reaches reindeer give birth to their babies on summer pastures.
This place is sacred for the native inhabitants of tundra; a lot of legends are associated with it. The main sanctuaries of the Extreme North indigenous peoples are located on the banks of the Yuribey River. The inhabitants of tundra bring ritual gifts and sacrifices to the willful Yuribey. Every time they go fishing in a different place in order to give a rest to the watercourse. Birds are hunted for food only. The local people take from nature as much as they need to support their lives.
In the vicinity of Yuribey, scientists have discovered traces of ancient civilizations, as well as remains of the two mammoths that are nowadays well-known to the global scientific community as mammoth Masha and baby mammoth Lyuba.
In order to retain the natives’ way of living that has been shaped over centuries, as well as to preserve the unique regional wildlife, a non-conventional solution was applied – the railway was raised above the water by building a unique bridge crossing via Yuribey. The crossing construction was launched only after the relevant safety technologies had been worked out.
The project was executed in such a manner that no structural element of the bridge could disrupt the traditional living of the native inhabitants or deteriorate the Yamal Peninsula’s ecology during the construction and operation processes.
Currently, agrotechnical and revegetation measures are being taken in the construction area in order to keep intact its flora and fauna. Special technologies and facilities are used to rule out the water and soil contamination. Landfills for solid household and construction waste are being created in conformity with the relevant requirements for safe waste disposal.
